Back pain

Back pain is one of the main reasons that people take time off from work in the UK.  It can be a frustrating – and painful – affliction that due to its tendency to be of non-specific origin often cannot be treated by your GP.  In most cases back pain will eventually go away on its own if you are patient enough to give yourself time to rest, however a visit to an osteopath can often diagnose the cause of your back pain (if you don’t already know it), provide treatment to alleviate the pain and offer advice on posture and exercise to reduce the likelihood of future suffering.  It is worth bearing in mind that the Department of Health advises that back pain sufferers seek early diagnosis and treatment as by doing so you can often reduce the intensity of the pain and how long it lasts.

As with all osteopathic sessions, your treatment will be tailored to your specific needs and can depend on factors such as:

  • the location of the pain
  • how long you have been suffering for
  • how severe the pain is
  • other medical conditions
Often the treatment will involve massage of the location of the pain as well as the surrounding area to relax the muscles and release any built-up tension.
