Sciatica can be described as lower back pain that extends down into the buttocks and legs (the pain can be as bad or even worse in the latter regions). It can be caused by a number of issues such as spinal injury or diseases, ‘slipped disc’ or general wear and tear.

Referring back to the principle of treating the body as a whole, osteopathy aims to diagnose and treat the cause of the sciatica over and above the symptoms.

Often, soft tissue massage will be employed to release any pressure, usually accompanied by gentle manipulation.  This will enable the osteopath to extend the range of movement of the region which can help to prevent a reoccurrence.  To complement this, you will often be advised as to changes you can make to how you sleep, stand, sit and lift heavy objects in order to further help you to avoid a reoccurrence.
